Developing Your Drawing Practice

$225

with Lori Sanford Ross

Calendar Next available session starts Apr 20, 2024 at 2 pm, runs for 4 weeks
1 additional session on Jun 1, 2024

This class is for anyone who loves to draw! In this inventive, ongoing drawing class, students will learn new ways to express their experience of the visual world through drawing. Using dynamic set-ups, still life, and natural objects, each class is devoted to drawing from observation with ease. Specific elements of realistic drawing – such as positive/negative space, perspective, proportion, value, composition, etc. — will be demonstrated and practiced. For inspiration, we will study the drawings of Rembrandt, Durer, Van Gogh, Cezanne, and several contemporary artists, in order to see through their eyes more deeply. The goal of this class is for students to develop a joyful drawing practice with freedom and confidence while silencing the narrative of the inner critic. Questions are encouraged, and gentle homework assignments will be suggested but not required.  This class is for adults and mature teens of all skill levels, and all materials are included. Feel free to bring any favorite drawing supplies or sketchbooks.

There is no class on May 11.

Calendar Next available session starts Apr 24, 2024 at 9:30 am, runs for 4 weeks

Getting high-quality renditions of your artwork can be an art-form in itself. This course will demonstrate how to create a seamless background for 3-D work such as sculpture and ceramics, as well as setups for flat and 2-D artwork. Using available light or fixtures that can be found around the home, as well as studio-based lighting, we’ll explore how to illuminate artwork to capture volumetric form and detail and natural color. Cameras that can be used for this class range from smartphones to DSLR’s and mirrorless. The course will also cover post-processing using apps as well as demonstrations of computer based software such as Photoshop and Lightroom. Students may bring a small-scale example of a 2D or 3D artwork for us to experiment with. This class is for adults and mature teens of all skill levels. Cameras are not included; please bring your own to class.

Apron and vegetables are provided but feel free to bring your own vegetables to experiment with as well.

Each Creative Happy Hour features a professional teaching artist leading a project, drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), and a chance to be creative in a special place. When possible, our galleries will be open during this event, so you also have the opportunity to take in the latest exhibition.
