Learning to Paint Again
with Lori Sanford Ross
If you haven’t picked up a paint brush since college, high school or kindergarten — or if you have never even picked up a paintbrush — this class is for you. Painting is a joyful, teachable skill that will open up a universe of color, expression, personal mark-making and visual perception. We will break down the basics of painting, everything from how to set up a palette, handle brushes, start a painting, mix color, apply paint to canvas —even the best practices for easy clean up. Our class will paint directly from life, using natural objects to explore color and composition. Every class will include a variety of time-tested painting exercises designed to increase your proficiency. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your skills will advance. It is time to start painting again, and re-enter the visual world with confidence.
All materials are included. The quality of water-based acrylic paint has improved greatly over the years, and we will be working with acrylic and a slow drying medium that increases paint flow. If you prefer to use oil paint, please email the instructor.

Color Deep Dive: Expanding Your Ability to See Color and Light
with Lori Sanford Ross
The paintings of Van Gogh, Matisse, Mary Cassatt, and Georgia O’Keeffe glow with luminous color and depth. In this color-focused class, we will examine the color secrets of master colorists to apply them to our own work. Every class will include a series of progressive color exercises and a dynamic still life, so students can practice mixing color and creating color relationships directly from a motif. We will use a variety of media, such watercolor, gouache, color pencils, and collage, and explore color concepts such value, hue, and color temperature. We will even learn to seek out a “color surprise” to enrich our paintings! Color theorists such as Joseph Albers and Hans Hofmann will be introduced and discussed, but the essence of the class is experiential, not theoretical.
The goal is for you to increase your confidence in perceiving and mixing color, as well as the courage to try unusual color combinations. Matisse said, “When I paint green, it doesn’t mean grass; when I paint blue, it doesn’t mean sky.” This class is open to beginners as well as experienced students. By having a deeper understanding of the effect of color and light on the motif before you, you will be able to identify the colors necessary to create a painting you love.

Watercolors Turbo for Intermediate Students
with Greta Corens
Land and Sea in Winter
In the Winter 2025 session, we paint watercolor scenes in the Transparent Warm Palettes and the Opaque Winter Palettes.
This session of 5 classes broadens the knowledge of Watercolor painting with new color challenges and technical demands. The intermediate artist expands and perfects acquired skills when introduced to novel color schemes and techniques to render colorful fall landscapes and icy winter scenes. We apply all known and new skills to painting nature when rendering from photographs on larger-size paper while we aim to develop a coherent and unique artistic quality. This stage of intensive exercises and accumulated knowledge intends to free us from technical demands so that we can begin to focus on finessing details and composition. Materials are not included; the teaching artist will reach out to all new students with a list of recommended watercolor supplies. Not sure if this level class is right for you? Send us an email! This class is for intermediate-level adults and mature teens.
