NYSATA Region 7 Professional Development - A Day of Observation and Interpretation

Spend the day making art, learning new techniques, and connecting with fellow art educators at this hands-on professional development opportunity designed for NYSATA Region 7 members! You'll participate in two 3-hour workshops—Figure Drawing for the Classroom and Abstract Drawing—with a break for lunch in between.

Participants will rotate between the two workshops, with some starting the day in Figure Drawing and others beginning with Abstract Drawing. There will be a one-hour lunch break to give you a chance to relax and connect with fellow educators.

Figure Drawing for the Classroom with Sheryl Levine

Do you have students who have difficulty representing people in their artwork? Big heads, small hands and small feet, short legs and narrow shoulders? In Figure Drawing and Proportion for the Classroom workshop, participants will learn the 7-1/2 head rule of proportion of the human figure. This workshop will begin with an interactive activity of discovering proportion by measuring the human figure. We will also work with a live model to apply these rules of proportion. You will need to bring drawing materials (graphite, charcoal, permanent markers and any other drawing media) for this workshop.

Discussion as to how figure drawing can be applied to a variety of media in the classroom will conclude the workshop, including, but not limited to sculpture, drawing, painting, fiber arts and mixed media.

Abstract Drawing with Melanie Delgado

Explore the world of abstraction through hands-on creativity! In this dynamic workshop, participants will start with paper shapes to build unique abstract compositions. You'll be introduced to key abstract artists and techniques, and experiment with warm-up exercises and mark-making methods. Perfect for artists looking to loosen up and try something new!

Come for the inspiration, leave with new skills, lesson ideas, and a stronger sense of community!

Part of this workshop is scheduled to be in our print studio, which is only accessible by stairs.

We believe art should be accessible for all. Financial Assistance is available for those who qualify.
