White Line Woodcuts
with Judy Mensch

White line woodcut was developed in the early 1900s in Provincetown, Massachusetts, by a group of artists, including Blanche Lazzell and B.J.O. Nordfeldt, who wanted an alternative to traditional Japanese woodblock printing. They were interested in simplifying the process and worked out a way to use one woodblock instead of several, one for each color.
We’ll focus on cutting the block, registration, using watercolor to print, and experimenting with different Asian papers. In some ways, these prints are like monoprints or unique, one-of-a-kind images. Each color is painted on the woodblock, then hand-printed to create a transparent or opaque surface.
There is a materials fee included in the tuition for this course. All materials are included. This class is for adults and mature teenagers of all skill levels and includes 2 hours a week of open studio time.

Pronto Plate Lithography

Discover the graphic art of pronto-plate lithography! This method uses a printing press and etching ink to make a direct impression from your drawings, tracings, cartooning, doodles, or from observational drawing. Start your art-making with sharpie markers, brush and ink, acrylic, or a wax pencil to draw or create textures onto the pronto plate which is then printed using etching ink and a printing press. Make a visual statement with your print, inspired by the outdoors around the print shop and by the community atmosphere of the class.
