One Subject, Many Interpretations

$60

with Sharon Rubinstein

Calendar Next available session starts May 23, 2024 at 6 pm, runs for 1 week

Experiment, and see how a single subject can be depicted in many ways! Exploration, artistic growth, fun - these are the goals of this class. We will concentrate on a single object or grouping (with several available as choices) across multiple class meetings. For students returning from last season, there will be new set-ups. The materials offered, each in a separate session, include pastels; water-mixable oil paint or acrylic; pen; pencil/charcoal; and watercolor. We will use very different approaches, from figurative realism to impressionism, to cubism! Depending on the particular session, we will use lots of color or next to no color. The saying "A rose is a rose is a rose" is true - but they indeed can look different. Find out, and expand your artistic imagination and capacity across media. Register for just a few weeks, or sign up for all five and save 10% with promo code FIVE. This class is for adults and mature teens of all skill levels, and all materials are included.

Class sessions (and some inspiring artists):

April 25: Black (or sepia) and white, realism
May 2: Loose realism, impressionism, fauvism - Manet, Matisse, Derain; Sargent, Cezanne

Learning to Draw Again

$280

with Lori Sanford Ross

Calendar Next available session starts May 18, 2024 at 10 am, runs for 5 weeks

If you think you can’t draw, or your drawing skills are limited because you don’t have “talent,” think again. This course will teach you to draw with confidence, so you can reclaim the love of drawing you had as a child, or discover it for the first time. Using many of the innovative concepts, methods, and tools developed by Betty Edwards, author of the bestselling Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, students will learn the skills needed to draw any object, person, or place with skill and enjoyment.

Students will learn and apply the five critical elements of drawing - edges, negative space, angles/proportion, light/shadow, and the perception of the whole (gestalt) — to quickly increase their ability. Sketchbooks will be encouraged, and students will have optional gentle assignments. The class will have a relaxed pace, although a lot of material will be covered. Students can choose to learn at a slower pace with instructor guidance.

This class is for adults and mature teens of all skill levels. All materials are included.

There is no class on May 25.
