Summer Drop-In Pottery: 4 classes

The Summer Drop-In Pottery is only available to students who have been enrolled in a Garrison Art Center adult pottery class in 2025 or 2026.
Summer Pottery is back again!
How does it work?
Summer Drop-In Pottery allows you to attend 4, 6, or 8 of our drop-in pottery classes this summer, taught by one of GAC’s Pottery teaching artists. Each class is 3 hours long, and 3 different time slots are available each week.
When does it start?
Summer drop-in pottery classes will begin July 5 and run through August 23. There will be a short break before our regular fall classes start in early September.
What times/days are available?
There are 3 class times a week: Sundays 2:00pm-5:00pm, Mondays 6:00pm-9:00pm, and Tuesdays 6:00pm - 9:00pm.
Do I have to come on the same day/time each week?
No! You can sign up for multiple classes in the same week, and skip a week (or more!) whenever you like.
How do I schedule my classes?
Lisa will be handling the scheduling. Once you have purchased your Summer Drop-In Pottery classes, contact lisa@garrisonartcenter.org with which days/times you would like to come. We will be limiting the number of people in each class, so you must sign up ahead of time for the days you want to attend.
We cannot accommodate students who show up without signing up first.
4 classes isn’t enough for me! Can I sign up for more?
Sure! Feel free to sign up for as many Summer Drop-In Pottery classes as you like. We have 6 and 8 class passes available as well.
Can anyone sign up for Summer Drop-In Pottery and use the studio?
The Summer Pottery Pass is only available to students who have been enrolled in a Garrison Art Center adult pottery class in 2025 or 2026.

Marbling Clay
with GAC Team
This class is for intermediate and advanced students only.
In this class, we'll explore the art of layering colored clays, creating pieces through both hand building and wheel throwing. Lisa Knaus, our Pottery Studio Manager and Teaching Artist, will start things off by guiding students through making their own colored clays using slip and stains — a hands-on, creative process from the very beginning. From there, Teaching Artist Kim Waldhauer takes over and shares her knowledge of creating patterns, as well as embracing the beautiful surprises that come with the process.
We'll wrap up with a glazing session, with special instruction on how to let your clay's natural colors take center stage rather than get lost under the glaze. Students choose their own colors — within the wonderful range that the stains make possible.

Beginner Pottery: wheelthrowing basics

Are you looking to try your hand at pottery? Have you always wanted to learn how to work with clay and throw on a potter’s wheel? Well, look no further! This 6-week class is a great opportunity to dip your toe into the world of pottery and wheelthrowing and experience what it’s all about. This class is for beginners only; mature teenagers are welcome.

Summer Art Institute for HS Students

GET SERIOUSLY CREATIVE
At the Summer Art Institute, students can discover their creative potential in this immersive two-week summer art program designed for high school students. Explore a variety of mediums—including drawing, painting, handbuilding with clay, and printmaking—guided by experienced teaching artists.
During the program, high school students are divided into two groups to ensure small class sizes and will have a full range of our facilities, enabling the development of creative abilities under the guidance and encouragement of outstanding teaching artists. Classes will take place in our printmaking studio, drawing studio, and pottery studio, and will make use of our outstanding location on the banks of the Hudson River when the weather allows. SAI culminates in a group exhibition in our professional galleries. This program is a great opportunity for high school students to explore their creativity, push themselves, and develop and advance their artistic abilities. This program will be led by teaching artist Daniel Loxton, Julia Prestigiacomo, and Melissa Schlobohm.
Tuition includes all materials needed for the program. There is the option to pay in full or take advantage of a payment plan. Signing up a sibling? Use the promo code SIBLINGS when signing up a second or third child and save $30. This program is open to all students entering or currently in high school, or graduated in 2026. Drawing and Painting from Life

Art a la Carte (Rising 2nd-4th graders)
with GAC Team
Art a la Carte offers children the opportunity to experience multiple types of art-making at our studios. This program offers two weeks of half-day, one-week classes in the morning and the afternoon, giving families the flexibility of half or full-day, and one or two weeks. Students registered for a full-day experience will be supervised for lunch and free time between classes. Students must bring their own food. Tuition includes all materials needed for the program.

Learn to use a simple thermo-print camera. Explore your environment, find a focus. Take instant flicks. Tint and color your black and white photos, creating a brilliant & fun-foldout album.
Week 1 afternoon DRAWING + PAINTING
(Somewhat) Scientific Illustrations with Kat Boss
Artists will take a closer look at the fascinating and strange wonders that bloom, swim, fly, or otherwise share our world, and document their observations through drawing and painting. They will develop their own curiosity cabinet on paper, recording patterns and organic shapes they find. Additionally, they will imagine discovering a never-before-seen life form, and be tasked to capture the nature of their unprecedented subject. Inspired by artist Sun Lee, students will use watercolor and ink to depict their findings.
Week 2 morning MIXED MEDIA
If I Drew the Zoo with Sam Shields
Using animals, real and imagined, to explore various two dimensional media. Spots, stripes, feathers, fur- we will depict creatures large and small. Each day our featured fauna will inspire works in drawing, painting, collage, and printmaking.
Week 2 afternoon ART WITH LIGHT
Create and Illuminate with Kate Daley
Construct dynamic works of art that change right in front of you! Make mobiles, lanterns, shadow puppets and more. Using light intentionally, your artwork will transform into many interpretations of itself. Color, scale, and perception will shift, depending on the
direction of light, time of day, and movement. For inspiration, we’ll look at the work of illuminated artists like Olafur Eliasson, Yayoi Kusama and Alexander Calder.
